We are here to serve you – MMC

MMC for Community Development shares her portfolio's vision with residents

“We want to ensure service delivery is satisfactory. We’re here to serve you because without you there is no us,” said councillor Nonhlanhla Sifumba, the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development.

The MMC visited various areas in the City of Johannesburg’s Region C to share her portfolio’s vision and engage residents on a number of issues – including public transport. The visits form part of a series of imbizos the department has embarked on to inform residents of the department’s role as well as to listen to their views and opinions on service delivery issues.

The Community Development portfolio has been reconfigured and now includes the Library and Information Services, the Massive Open Online Varsity (Moov) programme, the Sports and Recreation Directorate, the Arts and Culture Directorate, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, and the Johannesburg Theatres Company.

According to Nonhlanhla, it is important for residents to understand exactly what her portfolio entails, as all of the programmes and functions are there for their benefit.

Nonhlanhla addressed residents, and stakeholders on various topics, including the use of multi-purpose centres and the war on substance abuse. She urged young people to make use of the services offered at the multi-purpose centres, which includes the Moov programme as well as the Library Services. “My Department is working hard to ensure that the programmes provided at the various centres are attractive to young people so they could also participate,” she said.

She also urged all residents not to look the other way when it comes to drug and substance abuse, and to blow the whistle on drug dealers, saying, “The city cannot win the fight against substance abuse on its own. Join the newly launched K9 Narcotics Unit in this fight and let’s make it a success”.

She concluded by saying, “To be a responsive government, we need to engage all stakeholders on how to better the lives of the city’s residents. When you voted three months ago, you gave us the opportunity to develop communities and residents.”
