Florida takes LPL title

Florida claims top title

Florida Cricket Club’s U/13 team faced off against its Alberton Yellow U/13 counterpart recently. They were playing in the final of the Lenasia Premier League (LPL), and it was a chance for Florida to avenge themselves for last year’s loss to Alberton in the semifinals of the competition – on a technicality, after the day was rained out. Alberton’s victory in the championships last year added an extra incentive for Florida’s boys to go one-up on their opponents.

This year, Florida was unbeaten in reaching the finals, which were played at the Lenasia Stadium. The Alberton boys won the toss and elected to bat first, sending in their openers, Mohamed Patel and Tarquin Nel. However, they didn’t last long – Florida’s bowler, Neal Geldenhuys, sent them packing with just nine runs on the board. The fall of wickets did not stop there, as Florida’s bowlers went on to claim seven wickets for 40 runs. Drico Kriel took three wickets for just seven runs, and James Enslin also took three wickets – for a mere six runs. Alberton was eventually bowled out for a total of 41 runs with nine wickets down.

It was then Florida’s turn at the batting crease, but the openers, captain Billy van Zyl and Joshua Petzer made just six runs before the captain was bowled out. Joshua was then joined by Declan Osborn, who steadied the innings. He eventually lost his wicket after being caught out in the field for 10 runs but Dean Abbot came out and saved the match by hitting a boundary off the second ball he faced. He finished the match with four runs not out, with Joshua also not out on 20 runs off 17 balls. This gave Florida the victory and the LPL championship.
