No dream is impossible

Keegan talks about his Idols experience

“This was a life-changing experience and I have no regrets,” said 24-year-old Keegan Martin about his Idols SA experience.

His dream to win this popular competition came to an unexpected end when he was voted off after placing in the top seven.

It felt like an impossible dream for Keegan to achieve his goal of becoming a singer – hence the performance of the song by Luther Vandross. “After being on Idols, I feel that nothing is impossible, I can achieve anything. I learnt so much – from my first audition up to my last performance, and have grown as a singer and artist. I am ready to take on anything,” he said.

He cannot thank the Idols SA production team enough for looking after all of them so well. “I am so grateful, I have never experienced such treatment,” Keegan said. He enjoyed the competition but admitted that there was a lot of pressure at times, because he did not want to disappoint his supporters and wanted to do well. He also tried to not let everything go to his head and stay humble. “I had the opportunity to do what I’ve wanted since I was eight years old and by remembering that, I dealt with the pressure,” he said smiling.

When asked about the raving compliments he received from all the judges – especially Randall Abrahams – he answered simply,

“I took all the judges’ comments very seriously – even the negative ones – and learnt from them to better myself.”

Placing in the top 16 made him believe his dream was within reach and as he said, this was when the real work started. He forced himself to do every performance the way Keegan would do it. “I kept taking risks to ensure my performances were original, and they paid off,” said Keegan. He used his Idols experience to inspire others – especially the youth of South Africa – to show them it is never too late to follow your dream.

The next step for him – after Idols SA – is to stay in the music and entertainment business – to give back to all the supporters who invested their time, energy and resources to keep him in the competition.

“There is nothing I would have done differently – I believe every performance and song selection was meant to be. When I was voted off, I felt I was ready for the next step. I will be working closely with my booking agents to keep performing and stay in the public eye,” Keegan said.

He concluded with the following: “I just want all the remaining contestants to remember there is a winner in all of them. They should never stop reaching for their dreams – whether they make it on Idols or not, use the experience as a stepping stone to take you to your destiny.”
