Update: Hope fades of baby being found

No-one informed family about the case being handed over to another unit.

After another bungle by the police, hope is fading that the Mncube family’s kidnapped baby will be found.

According to Sophiatown Police Station spokesperson, Warrant Officer Jerbes de Bruyn, the case was handed over to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit at Johannesburg Central Police Station on 26 September, five days after the baby had been kidnapped.

This raises various questions. Why did they wait five days to start investigating the incident? Why was the family never informed that the case had been handed over to this unit? And finally, why did the Sophiatown Police Station’s investigation officer keep on ‘investigating’ the case even after it was handed over?

The one-day-old baby was kidnapped outside Coronation Hospital on 21 September.

Today (28 October) the Record will attempt to clarify the matter with the head of the unit, Colonel Kimba.
