Community welcomes new neighbourhood watch

Public welcome to attend Fun Day.

The residents of Roodepoort West now have their very own neighbourhood watch – Roodepoort West Neighbourhood Watch (RWNW).

They have been officially operating for a week and a half and are registered with the Roodepoort Community Policing Forum (CPF). According to Chairperson Hennie Nel there was a huge need for a watch in the light of the ever-escalating crime in the area.

“Crimes such as drugs, prostitution, housebreaking, trespassing, vehicle theft and dog poisonings are rife and recently we even had a hijacking,” said Nel.

The RWNW asks no membership fees at this stage but does take donations and hold fund-raisers. They patrol from Van Wyk Street to Hinda Street to Buitekant Street and also from Vaal Street to Hart Street, Stumke Street and Serfontein Street. Currently they have a 103 members on their S.O.S Whatsapp group, of which 27 are patrollers.

RWNW has invited not only the residents in its area, but the public at large to attend their Fun Day on 29 October. Acording to Nel, the main goal of the day is for neighbours to get to know each other and have a “lekker kuier”. The event will take place from 9am to 4pm at the Roodepoort Christian Community Church on the corner of Rubidge Street and Orange Road.

For more information on the RWNW, contact the chairperson, Hennie Nel on 072 221 1380, or the vice chairperson, Lance Burgess on 082 749 0101.
