Six deadly sins in the way of safer neighbourhoods

All crime-fighting organisations should heed this warning.

According to Security Practitioner Louis Grobler there are six ‘deadly sins’ that communities should avoid in order to create safer and better neighbourhoods.

Organisations such as neighbourhood watches as well as residents should pay attention to the following:

1. Dysfunctional streetlights – Dark streets attract criminals

2. Overgrowth – Overgrown vegetation is a hiding place for criminals

3. Vagrants – Vagrants and suspicious people in your suburb need to be dealt with. These people monitor your movements and have time to plot criminal activity

4. Dumping – A messy neighbourhood attracts criminals and shows that the community is also not concerned about what happens in the area

5. Crime – Residents need to keep abreast of crime in the area, inform the rest of the community about it and put countermeasures in place.

6. Roads – The upkeep of your infrastructure is important for a safe community. A lack of road signs and poor roads can cause accidents and make it difficult for safety officers to operate in the area.

7. Water – Water is a resource that needs to be seriously monitored as the shortage is becoming critical.
