National Reptile Awareness Day

21 October is National Reptile Awareness Day – a day created for reptile lovers to celebrate.
But this day is not only for the celebration of reptiles – it also promotes education, conservation and appreciation for reptiles. It is a day to learn about their natural habitats and the ecological threats faced by them.
A reptile is an amniote – neither bird nor mammal – which is cold blooded, has scales or scutes and can lay eggs on land. Scutes are the bony or horny plates that form the dermal layer of reptiles such as turtles and crocodiles. There are more than 10 000 species of reptiles.
To celebrate today, go to the zoo to see some reptiles. Or you can go online and do some research on all the various species of reptiles.
