18 October is National Chocolate Cupcake Day, a day especially for all chocolate and dessert lovers.
Cupcakes go by many other names, such as fairy cakes and patty cakes. Cupcakes can be traced back to a recipe notation written in Amelia Simmons’ American Cookery in 1796. The notation reads: “A cake to be baked in small cups”.
The earliest known documentation of the term “cupcake” was in 1828, when it was recorded in Eliza Leslie’s cookbook entitled Seventy-five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes and Sweetmeats.
Heavy pottery cups were originally used for baking cupcakes. Today, some bakers still bake their cupcakes in individual ramekins, small coffee mugs, large tea cups or other small oven-proof pottery type dishes.
To celebrate National Chocolate Cupcake Day you can go online – or page through grandma’s recipe book – and find a chocolate cupcake recipe to try. If you want to be adventurous, try some of the following combinations: cream cheese chocolate cupcakes, chocolate fudge cupcakes with peanut butter frosting or chocolate cream filled cupcakes. You can also invite your friends and family to come over and watch an episode of Cupcake Wars – a reality-based competition show on Food Network.
