What to do in an armed robbery or hostage situation

Always give robbers enough time to get away.

With violent crime spiralling out of control, local security practioner Louis Grobler has the following tips for residents should they find themselves in a hostage situation or an armed robbery:

1. Stay calm. If you feel the need to use a toilet, or if you need to take any medication, try to delay it and communicate with the robbers only when they seem to be calm and approachable.

2. Never make eye contact with the robber(s); this may endanger your life.

3. Don’t make sudden movements that might aggravate the robbers.

4. Try to communicate with the robber if you need to do something, e.g. take medication.

5 If you want to activate the alarm, rather do it secretly.

6 Try to memorise the facial features of the robber(s) in order to provide the police with a detailed description.

7 If possible, try to obtain details of their vehicle, but only if you can do so without endangering your life.

8 Always do as you are told.

9 Never try to be a hero. You can’t afford to lose your life over valuables that can be replaced.

10 Try to remember the direction of travel taken by the robber(s) when leaving.

11 Allow the robber(s) ample time to leave.
