CKPS and Kruiners are champs

Night series comes to a scintillating end.

Laerskool Helderkruin’s Night Cricket Series ended on a high note as four school teams vied for top honours. It was sixes and fours galore as Laerskool Helderkruin took on Laerskool Florida in the Plate final, while Constantia Kloof Primary School (CKPS) faced off against Laerskool Randfontein.

The three-week tournament featured more than 10 senior cricket school teams from the West Rand. The format of each match was 15 overs per innings, with a team having to either bowl out its opponents or bowl all 15 overs.

The tournament, which is in its 13th year, gives young cricket players a platform to develop their skills. It is also an opportunity for the players to experience the shorter format of the game.

In the Plate final, the home team’s opening pair of Joshua Dullisear and Neil Barnard were in scintillating form, providing a solid start for their team. Dullisear scored a quick-fire 47 runs off 27 balls, hitting five boundaries and three sixes before being bowled out. Barnard was unbeaten with his score of 60 runs off 46 balls, becoming the anchor of the innings with seven boundaries and one six. This allowed Christian Pauer to score a quick 13 runs off six balls before being bowled out for 14 runs. Together, the Helderkruin team set their opponents, Florida, a target of 134 runs. Helderkruin’s bowlers were right on the money and restricted Florida to 124 runs, with contributions from bowlers such Barnard, Dullisear and Michael Fouchè. Helderkruin won the Plate final by 10 runs, and Barnard was declared Man of the Match.

In the Trophy final, CKPS’ opening batsmen Thabo Moyo and Corne Vermeulen were like a house on fire, getting their team off to a flying start. Moyo was caught out on 37 runs, after hitting four boundaries and one six. Vermeulen carried the innings, knocking a superb 70 runs before being stumped. He hit nine boundaries and four sixes, setting up a mammoth target of 152 runs for their opponents, Randfontein, to chase down. Moyo then sparked with the ball, taking two wickets as he helped his team defend their total. CKPS bowled Randfontein out for 113 runs, thus winning the Trophy final. Vermeulen was named Man of the Match.
