Winston victorious on debut

Winston shocks all with debut victory

The Witpoortjie Vikings Amateur Boxing Club hosted a provincial development tournament at the Azaadville Recreation Centre. Junior and youth boxers from all corners of Gauteng participated in the competition.

There were 43 exciting bouts on the bill and each bout entertained the crowd. The Vikings had nine boxers competing and only three managed to be victorious, illustrating the high standard of boxing in the tournament.

For the majority of the Vikings boxers that competed, it was their first or second time in the ring. Jayden Richard and Kyle Britz won their matches but the highlight was Winston Kruger who won his debut match. His match had everyone in awe, including the adjudicators. He was awarded Fight of the Day and named Best Male Boxer. His club also named him Boxer of the Day.

Vikings coach Phillip du Randt was happy about how well the tournament went and with his boxers’ overall performance.

“The tournament was a success. The Vikings had sponsored the runners-up medals while Gauteng Boxing Association sponsored the winners medals.

However, to us the big talking point was Winston’s amazing performance. As his coach I was surprised and proud of how well he competed. He’ll be getting better and better each time he competes in the ring,” he said.
