History made in City of Joburg

The DA's Herman Mashaba has been elected as the new Executive Mayor

The inaugural council sitting of the new City of Joburg’s Municipality lasted almost 12 hours, but the results are finally in.

And, it’s official – the DA made history when Herman Mashaba was appointed as the City of Joburg’s new Executive Mayor after receiving 144 votes. Parks Tau, the other candidate for the position, received 125 votes.

A number of things happened during the meeting that caused several stoppages and a short adjournment before the voting continued. One of the ANC councillors fainted during the proceedings and sadly passed away.

There were two candidates for the position of Chief Whip for the Council, namely Councillor Kevin Wex from the DA and Councillor Solly Mogase from the ANC. After the votes were counted, Kevin Wex was announced as the Chief Whip.

After his appointment, Mayor Mashaba thanked everyone involved, including the EFF management, for all they had done for the country. He also asked to postpone his acceptance speech in memory of the ANC councillor who had passed away.

In his speech, he took the opportunity to remind his new council to remember the importance of public service, and declared corruption to be enemy number one.

Was this the outcome you were hoping for? Do you believe the newly appointed Executive Mayor and his councillors will be able to fulfill all the promises made before the election?
