Lathitha’s world of words

Lathitha is one step closer to her dream becoming true.

Discovery Primary Full Service School’s Lathitha Beyile recently took a step closer to realising her dream of becoming a published author.

She was one of 500 pupils from 10 West Rand schools who entered a competition held by the Ducere Foundation, Spell It and Monash South Africa.

The pupils had to enter stories inspired by Nelson Mandela and the winning stories chosen would be published in the African Children Stories book.

“It is an exciting feeling knowing people will be reading my poem. I love creative writing so this is the first step in the right direction,” said the 13-year-old.

In her poem, Lathitha compares Mandela to a butterfly, noting the grace and poise the two have in common.

“Like a butterfly, Mandela was graceful and not arrogant. He was peaceful just like a butterfly and that is what led to the comparison,” she said.

Lathitha, who envisions herself as an accomplished author publishing a series of books, said she loves being in a world of words because there is no right or wrong.

“Unlike mathematics or science where things are logical, words enable you to share your feelings and write about something someone can relate to. Through words I can create a world where I can be understood,” said the Grade 7 pupil.

Lathitha discovered her passion for writing when she was 10. Entering the competition was a way for her to receive validation and guidance for her writing.

“To me it was not about winning but more about seeing whether I was good enough. So when I was told my poem was selected, I couldn’t believe it. I never liked writing before but the more I started reading the more passionate I became about it,” she said.

Besides becoming an author, Lathitha’s goal is to start a creative-writing club where talent can be nurtured.

“I would love to publish a book by the time I’m 18. I also want to start a club. I feel this will also create a culture of reading in our community,” she said.
