Photos: Father arrested, son hospitalised after drunk accident

Boy's head went through wind screen.

At about 9pm on Saturday (13 August), West Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch attended an accident scene at the corner of Progress and Prosperity Roads.

An alleged drunk driver lost control of his bakkie and ploughed into the barriers at the petrol pumps of the Sasol service station. On impact his son’s head went through the windscreen. The man sustained injuries to his head and ribs. The boy was taken to hospital while Metro Police arrested the father. The father allegedly told the Metro Police that he had fallen victim to an attempted hijacking and sped to the fuel station for safety. Metro Police officers took the boy home after he was treated at Leratong Hospital.

In a second incident another alleged drunk driver, also in a bakkie was driving on Mc Grath Avenue at about 1am on Sunday, when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed Nassau Street and drove into a house’s perimeter wall. This was the second time in a year that a vehicle crashed through the exact same wall.

Over the weekend Metro Police arrested more than 300 drunk drivers of which 14 were females, said spokesperson Wayne Minnaar. He said it shows that drunk driving among women is increasing. “In the past we would only arrest three or four females on a weekend; now it is 14 just on a Saturday night,” said Minnaar.
