Video interview: Assault charge ‘possibly’ changed to murder

The case has been postponed until 17 August, pending the hospital's report.

The 31-year-old man who allegedly assaulted his common-law wife’s father, 59-year-old Joe de Beer to such an extent that he had to be hospitalised and subsequently died, appeared again in the Roodepoort Magistrates Court today.

The defence attorney objected to the State’s request to change the charge to murder, but the State argued that they are only waiting for a hospital report which will prove that the man’s death was the consequence of the assault. The deceased, who was bedridden and wheelchair-bound, passed away in Leratong Hospital three days after he was assaulted in his bed.

Six members of De Beer’s family were in court today. The case has been postponed until 17 August, pending the hospital’s report.
