Dangerous prisoners escape before court appearance

Details still sketchy.

Two dangerous prisoners, one an armed robber, escaped from the police truck they were being transported in from Krugersdorp Correctional Facility yesterday (4 August).

According to a credible source the two prisoners were to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court. Although details are sketchy, the two men allegedly smuggled a piece of iron, speculated to be a crow bar, from the prison into the van. While travelling the men managed to pry open the bars in front of one of the windows of the truck. Just before Sunshine Wholesalers on Albertina Sisulu Road and about a kilometre from the court the two men escaped through the small window.

The police confirmed the incident but did not want to comment yet. Correctional Services could not be reached for comment.
