Popular family restaurant robbed at gunpoint
One of the suspects gave him back his cell phone because "it was not modern enough."
The popular Wild Eagle Spur in Hole-in-one Avenue and its customers fell prey to an armed robbery last night (3 August).
According to owner Chris Marks, five armed men entered the restaurant at about 7pm. The well-dressed men posed as customers but as they sat down one of the managers got suspicious and walked to the office to press the panic button. Unfortunately the suspects caught on what the manager was about to do and followed him. In the office, where another manager was busy, they forced them at gunpoint to open a safe that only contained a small amount of change.
“We drop our large sums of money in a drop safe and obviously only our security company has access to that,” said Marks.
The suspects then went back to the floor and took the customers’ wallets, cellphones and other valuables. One customer told Marks afterwards that one of the suspects gave him back his cell phone because “it was not modern enough”.
Thereafter they fled in a white Nissan Sentra and a Toyota Avanza. It is believed there were two getaway drivers over and above the five robbers who were in the restaurant. According to Marks the robbery took only about seven minutes and no one was injured. He said the robbers got away with only a small amount of money.
“We have been open since 2008 and this is the first incident of its kind. The robbery could have turned out much worse but I believe the security measures we have, such as the drop safe, and my vigilant staff prevented that. We will continue earning an honest living and will not allow criminals to dictate to us. We hope to see our regular customers soon,” concluded Marks.
A case of armed robbery has been opened. No arrests have yet been made.
Provincial Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kay Makabhula has asked that anyone with any information about the incident must please contact their local police station.
