Residents still waiting to receive promised title deeds

MEC did not honour promise to hand over title deeds.

Residents flocked to the Davidsonville Recreation Centre in their masses on the morning of 1 August, to receive the MEC of Housing who was due to hand over long overdue title deeds to home owners.

The residents braved the cold weather to gather at the hall from 10am, some walking on their own or with support to wait for the promised meeting, but they waited in vain as the MEC did not show up.

The Patriotic Association of South Africa (Pasa) arranged this meeting. “For years people have been talking about doing something about the problem but they never did anything. Pasa decided to act. We organised a protest and the MEC’s office said they would meet with us today,” said Celeste van Rensburg, Pasa candidate for Ward 71. She also said they were not sure who would be attending the meeting. “We will wait for them to arrive to see who will be handing over the title deeds.”

One of the community members, Martin Welcome said, “Some of us have been waiting for almost 30 years and have never received our title deeds. We only receive promises from the government. Now that it is almost election time they want to do something.”

Christabelle Pienaar, one of the community leaders representing the older people, was very angry. She said, “Some of these people are very old and might pass away one of these days. If they have not received a title deed, what do they have to pass on to their children?”
