Suicide drama at Florida Lake

Police's Water Wing dispatched.

On Friday afternoon (22 July) at about 4.30pm Florida Sector 2 CPF and Apcan Armed Response received a distress call about a person sitting on a solar panel in the middle of Florida Lake.

The teams immediately responded to the scene. They took a canoe and rowed to where the person was sitting. They found that the man, who is about 35 years old, was suicidal. After about an hour of fruitless negotiations the team returned to shore.

A second team was deployed by canoe and the Police Water Wing was contacted. Another hour of negotiations with the by then hypothermic man also did not yield any result.

The team again returned to shore. Water Wing members then launched a rescue boat and forcefully removed the man from the solar panel. They brought him back to shore unharmed, but he was extremely cold.

He was admitted for psychiatric evaluation.
