Update: Police mum over cop who ‘lost’ his gun

After months police have yet to report on the status of the investigation.

One month after the Record has raised its concerns over a Sophiatown Police Station sergeant who allegedly sold his service pistol to a drug dealer, the investigation and its status are still shrouded in mystery.

Over and above the firearm issue, a complainant also alleged that the man acted inappropriately in the presence of his two teenage daughters by walking around naked and entering the bathroom while they were bathing. He allegedly tried to solicit sex from his daughters’ friends. The complainant said the man sells prescription drugs illegally.

On June 27 Lieutenant Colonel Dlamini, Provincial Police spokesperson said, “Police at Sophiatown have engaged the Department of Social Services and the Prosecuting Authority to deal with all the allegations involving this family. However, criminal investigations relating to the loss of a state firearm are continuing. Cases of illegal dealing in firearms and ammunition, and of perjury are being investigated, although the policeman claimed that the firearm was stolen from him. An internal investigation relating to all the allegations is also under way. All the allegations are being considered very seriously by the station management.”

The Record has attempted numerous times this past week to establish the status of the investigation and whether the officer in question is still on active duty, but to no avail.

A second party with an interest in the allegations said, “All attempts to get clarity from the police station have been fruitless. We get the feeling that they are protecting him.”
