Update: Court case of fatal assault suspect postponed

Pending further investigation.

The case of the 31-year-old suspect who allegedly fatally assaulted his common-law-wife’s 59-year-old father on 16 June, has been postponed until 10 August.

The elderly, bedridden, wheelchair-bound man passed away in Leratong Hospital on 19 June after he was allegedly attacked in his bed by the suspect. Although he was discharged from hospital the day after the attack, he was readmitted to hospital the day he passed away. His family only found out he had died three days later.

The son of the deceased made various allegations including that the suspect was a drug addict, that he assaulted him (the son) with a cricket bat on a previous occasion and that he assaulted his victim’s neighbour on the same day he assaulted the deceased.

The case has been postponed pending further investigation. It is believed the charge will be changed to murder on 10 August. Currently he is out on bail for the charge of assault.

He will be appearing in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court.
