Metrobus strike continues

Reasons for strike unclear.

The dispute that led to a Metrobus staff strike this past Friday has yet to be resolved.

According to Metrobus communication manager Esther Dreyer, all bus services remain cancelled. She said the service entity has taken this step to ensure commuters’ safety. She said top management were in discussions with the disgruntled strike leaders to try and resolve the dispute. The dispute is allegedly over employees – mostly the bus drivers – who are unhappy and refuse to accept their journeys being monitored by a private company on a daily basis. This entails a bus being stopped and random checks made to determine if every passenger has a valid bus ticket and that required processes are being followed. This practice is not uncommon in the bus industry. Employees have disrupted operations and buses are currently not running. The union has distanced itself from this action and Metrobus management is engaging directly with workers on the matter.

Dreyer apologised to the public for any inconvenience caused by the strike. She appealed to Metrobus passengers to arrange for alternative transport until further notice.
