Keeping yourself and your family safe

Never leave firearms unattended in a vehicle

APCAN Security Risk Management recently issued a number of safety tips for the community to apply, when at home or driving. This comes after a recent spike in home burglaries and car hijackings:

•Keep your firearms and ammunition in a good-quality safe

•Never leave firearms unattended in a vehicle

•Avoid using laundry facilities in an apartment complex alone, especially at night. Team up with a neighbour or friend.

•If you’re leaving your home for a long period, don’t mention it on your answering machine’s recorded message, and advise your security company so that they can do extra patrols

•Never leave workmen unattended around your house

•Install an alarm system and test it on a regular basis with the control room

•Keep your entrance clear of plants or obstacles which can provide a hiding place for would-be robbers and other criminals

•While driving, keep an eye out for anyone following you. If in doubt, go to the nearest point where there is human activity, and contact the police

•Ensure that all valuables and important documents are photocopied, authenticated by a Commissioner of Oaths and securely locked away. If you do not have a fire-proof home safe, lodge the copies with your bank for safe keeping

•Ensure that all windows are fitted with adequate locks and/ or burglar bars that cover all glass areas
