Police warn of new crime trends

The Criminal Investigation Department and the Roodepoort Police have issued a strong warning to the community about two new crime trends.

They have urged residents to not go outside at night if they wake up and hear their outside tap running. “Criminals are now using this method to get unsuspecting victims to open their doors and gain entry into their homes,” said Roodepoort police spokesperson Nonhlanhla Khumalo.

She also advised residents to install a panic button in the bathroom as a precaution, saying “We have also found that criminals tend to lock the family of the house they’re robbing in the bathroom. This prevents them from calling for help while the criminals ransack the home. If possible, we urge residents to install a panic button in an inconspicuous place in their bathroom.”
