Claims about lack of food refuted

Marius Oelofse, admitted they had a problem with food

The Record paid a surprise visit to the Have a Heart Care Centre after complaints were received that the residents don’t receive adequate food.

The Record arrived just before lunch and the smells emanating from the kitchen were mouth-watering. The dishes were already clean and stacked on the dining tables and the residents were eager to dish up.

According to some of the complaints received, the residents apparently receive only two slices of dry bread with a slice of polony on the side. “I heard from two residents that they received two cream cracker biscuits for lunch one day. They said no vegetables are served and they hardly get any meat. Most of the dinners consist of mashed potato,” said a concerned community member. She wanted to remain anonymous because she didn’t want the residents to be victimised.

The founder of the care centre, Marius Oelofse, admitted they had a problem with food. “The person in charge of the kitchen stole some food, which set us back by about R5 000. I can, however, guarantee that the residents receive veggies and meat at least three times a week and lunch usually consists of bread, and bully beef or pilchards. I often buy them vetkoek for lunch too,” said Marius.

He told us that some residents had informed him that the person in charge of the kitchen was stealing cellphones and money too. “She admitted guilt and we immediately evicted her from the centre,” he said.

Another complaint we received was that the lift is still not in working order. Marius explained that some residents use walking aids and have difficulty climbing the many stairs. He said they had obtained a few quotes to have the lift fixed, but it would cost them about R350 000. “We simply don’t have that kind of money,” he added.

“We would like to appeal to the community to assist us with food. I bought a freezer and can now store more fresh veggies and meat. Also, if there is someone who can help us to renovate the lift (the whole shaft has to be redone) we would be eternally grateful.”

Anyone who can assist can call Marius on 082 952 7151.
