Help Sparrow Village celebrate 25 years of service

Sparrow Village is issuing a challenge to local residents to raise funds in celebration of 25 years of service.

This year is Sparrow Village’s 25th birthday and they are asking you to help them celebrate. In the current economic climate, with expenses soaring and income dwindling, it’s difficult for the establishment to keep its head above water, but Reverend Corine McClintock is determined to stay positive.

Sparrow Village has tirelessly provided a 24-hour free of charge service to those suffering from HIV and Aids for many years. “We take people from all walks of life. no matter their ethnicity or nationality,” Corine said.

It takes about R700 000 a month to pay for things like petrol, salaries, schooling and the running of the village. Although the village relies primarily on the generosity of the community as well as help from corporations such as CTM tiles, Woolworths, Standard Bank and Pick n Pay, they’re sorely in need of a good fundraiser.

“Sparrows has turned into somewhat of a chronic care facility,” said Corine. The village allows people to stay for two years, whereas most other care facilities only offer their services to their patients for a maximum of two months.

The hospice at Sparrow Village houses 35 adults and one child; the mother-and-child cluster unit houses 20 mothers who each have three or four children, and the village also houses 26 18-year-old youths. The patients at the village take part in many activities including jewellery-making, sewing, bead-work, marimba-playing, and soccer and baseball, all of which helps to raise funds and lets them live a full life.

The Village would like to thank all of its donors, especially Dr Roland Williams from Flora Clinic, who treats the patients free of charge.

You can help Sparrow Village by making a donation or volunteering your services so that they can continue doing their good work.
