Winter paddling heats up

Young paddler excel at race

Winter may be upon us but the river racing season is heating up while water levels are low and manageable.

To build up to the A grade river races from October to March next year, paddlers need to gain experience as well as points for qualification to do the A grade rivers and build up their stamina, endurance and fitness.

This year, the Victoria Lake Canoe Club has hosted a number of novice friendly beginner races to help get the new paddlers acclimatized to the sport.

The past weekend, the race that took place on World Environment Day (5 June) as a tribute to Paddle For The Planet started at Meyerton and ran 22 kilometres on the Klip River to Three Rivers near the junction of the Vaal river.

Florida Lake Canoe Club’s Jaydon Hunt who at 14 years old, is allowed to race in a single canoe made good use of his opportunity.

He has paddled in the Gauteng Canoe Union School League and has been enjoying his adventures and challenges on the river, sailing through rapids effortlessly due to his experience.

Hunt finished the 22 kilometre river race in a time of 1:56.
