What a shock it was to read that City Power had won the award for the Power Utility of the Year. The first thing that comes to mind is that, if they are the best, what must the worst be like? Secondly, what was the criteria against which this award was being validated. To further claim that diligent work has been recognised, makes a mockery of this entire Africa Utility Awards. The fact that this ceremony was held in Cape Town is perhaps an indication of the probability that they were expecting yet another power cut in Johannesburg, and that they could not face the embarrassment.

Maybe Mr. Xulu should check the meaning of the word “diligent” which, according to the Oxford English Dictionary means “Constant in application, persevering in endeavour, not lazy”. A short analysis of this would indicate that City Power is a far cry for even getting remotely close to this, given the lack of service delivery not just recently, but for many years now.

Maintenance, or the lack thereof, has resulted in current systems failing on a daily basis and new development being put on hold. The administration side of City Power is an even a bigger farce, as basic accounting principles cannot even be applied to ensure the smooth running of accounts. For 4 years now, our company has been at loggerheads with City Power in sorting out our account and we are no further than the day we started. We are currently referring this to the Industry Ombudsman in the hope that they can resolve this matter because City Power simply does not have the insight to do so.

Our faith in City Power has definitely not been restored and we actually think it will be even worse, now that they are in the clouds over this undeserved award.
