Warning: Urban myth turns out to be true

Key rings apparently are exceptionally pretty.

Roodepoort Police has confirmed that what has long been held to be an urban myth is actually a real scam criminals use to target their victims.

For a while a warning has been doing the rounds on social media that residents should not buy or accept free key holders when offered in public places such as parking garages, fuel stations or airports.

“The Police wants to warn the community about a syndicate of criminals selling beautiful key holders in public places such as airports and petrol stations. The criminals parade themselves as sales promoters giving out free key holders. Please do not buy or accept these key holders no matter how beautiful they look. The key holders have inbuilt tracking device chips which allows them to follow you home or wherever your car is parked. The key holders are very beautiful and difficult to resist. Accepting their offer may endanger your life.

Please pass this message on to colleagues, friends, family and loved ones,” said Roodepoort Police Spokesperson Nonhlanhla Khumalo.
