Police warn public of rampant scam

Various cases reported.

Roodepoort Police has appealed to the public not to fall for a scam that is currently doing the rounds.

Victims receive an SMS saying a case has been opened against them for an outstanding traffic fine. When they respond to the SMS they are told that a warrant of arrest has been issued but if they pay the fine into a certain bank account it will be withdrawn.

Usually the person then has to contact Constable Baloyi on 060 800 8148, but other names have also been used. The victim is asked to pay the money either into an FNB account (62017066201) or an Absa account (4054021171).

According to the police they only contact a person with an SMS to give them a case number when a case has been opened.

The Police has asked that residents contact their nearest Police station if they suspect someone is attempting to defraud them.
