Layla going strong

Keep Layla in your prayers

Layla O’Neill, the young girl who stole the hearts of every South African as she crossed the finish line at last year’s Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge went for an MRI scan this week.

Layla was diagnosed with ependymoma two years ago. Ependymoma is a type of childhood cancer which affects the brain and spinal cord.

Ependy Angels is an organisation which assists children who are fighting cancer, and their families.

Her mother Sharon founded the non-profit organisation, Ependy Angels shortly after her daughter was diagnosed.

With Layla’s medical bills coming to roughly R58 700 per month, her family decided to raise funds for the MRI scan.

By selling Red Velvet cake pops and cupcakes, they managed to raise R14 000 of the R20 000 they needed for the scan.

The preliminary results showed that Layla has new tumors on both her brain and spine.

However, she also had to be admitted to hospital as she now has an infection in her urine and blood.

“Firstly thank you for all your love and support over the past two weeks.Your donations and gifts have been really appreciated. Should you find it in your budget to help us fund Layla until we raise more money for her, please contact us on sharyn.oneill@ependyangels.co.za
