New-born baby found on busy road

Man says he is shocked no one stopped.

A local resident is still reeling from shock after having experienced people’s inhumanity when a newborn baby was left in the middle of the road on Saturday.

Hein Erasmus, 35, was shocked when his colleague arrived at work on Saturday and told him what he had seen on 14th Avenue.

Erasmus, who works at a car dealership in Constantia Kloof said he usually arrives at his work before 7am. When his visibly shocked colleague arrived at 7am he told Erasmus that he was disgusted at what he just saw. As he came off the N1 and turned onto 14th Avenue he saw a baby on the road, but none of the passing motorists stopped.

“In fact they were driving around the infant who was lying in the road. I understand that this is a hijacking hotspot but I can not believe that people just drove on,” said Erasmus.

Erasmus then told his colleague they must return immediately to where he had seen the baby. When they arrived at the scene police and an ambulance already were there. Erasmus said he held the baby girl in his arms for a while before she was taken away by the emergency service. According to Erasmus the baby who was wrapped in a blanket still had her umbilical cord attached and was alive when the ambulance took her away.

“The parents of the baby better pray I do not get hold of them,” said an angry Erasmus.

The Record could not established which emergency service attended to the matter and is waiting for police to comment.
