Don and Bernice celebrate their diamond year

Most people can't stand each other for 60 years, but Don and Bernice spent it loving one another.

This afternoon (Thursday 24 March) Don, 88, and Bernice Spencer, 82, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at Tornado Park Old Age Centre.

The diamond couple spent the afternoon with 26 of their closest friends and family in the centre’s hall around beautifully decorated yellow-and-green tables. They were welcomed into the hall with Peter Denyssen playing Wagner’s Bridal Chorus (commonly referred to as ‘Here comes the bride’). A lunch of cold meats and salads was served. Their son Grant, his wife Marisa and granddaughter Chanté helped the couple remember that fateful day in 1956 when they exchanged vows, presenting beautiful wedding photos. After Marisa and Grant each made short speeches and shared fond memories, she dedicated a beautiful poem regarding the diamond anniversary to them.

Don and Bernice emigrated to South Africa from Zimbabwe in 1983 and lived in Rosebank. Back in Zimbabwe, Don worked at a furniture and appliances company, and in South Africa he worked for Nowens Carpets and Pick n Pay in later years. He was the general manager of Pick n Pay in Norwood. Bernice was a housewife. Upon his retirement in 2013, the couple moved into Tornado Park.

Grant’s younger sister, Leanne, sadly passed away seven years ago. Don and Bernice are grandparents to three boys and a girl. On Saturday 26 March the couple will enjoy further celebrations with the family.
