DA candidate councillors ready for action

Meet your possible local government representatives.

These guys and gals from the DA hope to become your next community representative.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) released their final list of candidates aspiring to become ward councillors, pending the outcome of the 2016 local elections.

These five candidates stand for Wards 70, 71, 83, 84, and 85.

But what is it that a councillor does? According to a ward councillor handbook published by the South African Local Government Association (Salga) in 2006, a councillor’s job is to find sustainable ways in which to meet their ward’s social, economic and material needs and improve the quality of their lives. This does not mean it is a ward councillor’s responsibility to resolve issues, but rather to represent his or her ward’s interests in local government, working within the framework and infrastructure provided by the ruling party. Councillors are mandated to make decisions on behalf of their wards. They are to work in a transparent manner and remain accountable to their people. They serve as a link between councils and communities and are to help monitor municipal performance.
