Third day of unease around Zandspruit

Major traffic problems on Hendrik Potgieter Road.

Roads around Zandspruit informal settlement remain closed as the stand-off between the protesters and authorities continues.

Parts of Beyers Naudé Drive and Peter Road are still closed off. Motorists are advised to use Hendrik Potgieter Road but the volume of traffic combined with the traffic lights being out last night led to traffic chaos.

According to ER24 several people were injured yesterday afternoon. ER24 paramedics first were called to the Beyers Naude Drive and Peter Road intersection where four men reportedly had been injured.

Paramedics found that three men had sustained minor injuries from objects being thrown. They treated the patients and thereafter transported them to Life Flora Clinic for further treatment.

ER24 paramedics later responded to a second incident were a child and mother reportedly had been injured. Paramedics went to one of the informal homes in Zandspruit, where they found a female caregiver and six-month-old baby. Both patients had suffered mild smoke inhalation, apparently from the tyres burning nearby.

Paramedics treated both patients before they were transported to Rahima Moosa Hospital for further treatment.

The protest erupted after the informal settlement dwellers’ illegal electricity connections were disconnected.
