Helderkruin gym back to (relatively) decent hours

CoJ meets community halfway and extends gym hours by two hours.

The Biokinetics Centre (‘Helderkruin gym’) in Pheasant Street is back to keeping fairly normal gym hours, according to Ward 85 councillor Carl Mann.

The gym again operates in a way that could accommodate residents outside of normal working hours, but only by an hour or two. Hours that extended from 6am til 6pm previously were suddenly cut to 7.30am til 4.30pm in February. Mann could finally meet with regional deputy director of Environmental Health, Tebogo Motsepe nearly a month after the initial Record article appeared. From the meeting, Mann learned Motsepe had also met with the users’ committee (of around eight people) since the article appeared and had decided to extend the operating hours based on an agreement with them.

“Although the biokinetics center is still not open past the afternoon (4pm) it is now, at least, again possible for those who used it early in the morning to commence doing so again,” Mann told the Record.

Animosity flared towards Mann when a committee member was in the gym while Mann visited to inspect it. Although the member had agreed, later, to involve him in committee meetings this promise had never been delivered on, Mann told the Record.

“Motsepe, in our meeting, agreed to invite me personally to committee meetings going forward.

“I feel it is necessary for me to at least be in the know regarding committee decisions, as the community will turn to me, as before, if something goes wrong,” he explained.

He also put forward a suggestion that community members can be approached to sponsor gym equipment. This after it was made clear that some of the gym equipment was in bad shape, but the City of Johannesburg does not have budget for repairs nor replacements on them. He is still awaiting feedback on this proposal.
