Things you didn’t know (but should) about voting in SA

Find answers to frequently asked questions and little-known facts about voting here.

Think voting is straight forward? Think again.

It’s no wonder the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has various frequently asked questions (FAQs) sections on their website.

While people are getting ready and registered for the upcoming municipal elections, the Record sorted through information available on voting in South Africa and found you the weirdest facts and most useful information.

• Political parties’ posters are not allowed to be put up at or near a registration or voting station.

• No registration supervisor or IEC official may wear political party colours on election day (2016 date still to be set).

• You don’t need to re-register to vote if your maiden name recently changed to your married name.

• The voter’s roll is open for public inspection during IEC office hours for you to check and verify your details.

• Voting districts and boundaries are bound to change, which means you might need to vote at a new station this year. To find out where, visit the IEC website’s handy voting station locator.
