King’s School’s own heroine identified

Grade 8 pupil helps 9-year-old after she was pulled out to sea.

Grade 8 pupil, Savannah Taylor, 14, found her inner heroine in the South Coast over the school holidays.

She spent December in Ramsgate on the South Coast. It was on one of the summer days on the beach that she aided in the rescue of a nine-year-old girl who was pulled out to sea by a rip tide, her older sister Sasha told the Record.

“Rip tides are the undercurrent that pulls a person out to sea; the only thing one can do is remain calm and float until help comes.

“The more you struggle and fight it, the easier you’ll become exhausted and risk drowning,” she said.

Savannah saw the girl was panic-stricken and swam out to her. She helped her calm down and remained with her while signalling to the life guards for help.

“Once the girl was helped Savannah was able to get herself back to the beach, utilising the butterfly stroke,” Sasha said.

“She was recently appointed a learner representative (LRC) at the school, unknown to her peers who voted for her that she showcased true leadership recently,” Sasha boasted.
