Six injured in horrific head-on collision

Four-year-old pedestrian injured in separate incident.

On Saturday at 20.17pm Netcare 911 paramedics responded to what they described as a horrific head-on collision between a bakkie and a Chevrolet Trailblazer along Christiaan de Wet Road.

Exact details of what caused the crash are still speculative and will form part of a police investigation.

At the scene paramedics were faced with carnage. The twisted frames of the vehicles and accident debris consistent with that of a high-impact collision were spread across about 50m of roadway.

After the injured were triaged, it was found that one adult and a six-year-old girl had sustained life-threatening injuries, with four others in a serious condition. Paramedics and firefighters worked hand in hand to stabilise the injured at the scene. The Netcare Two medical helicopter airlifted the critically injured child to a specialised facility. Ambulances from various services transported the other patients to nearby hospitals.

In a separate incident on Sunday afternoon Netcare 911 paramedics received a call regarding a pedestrian crash along Fifth Avenue in Roodepoort North.

Reports on the scene indicated that the boy was walking along the road with his father when he suddenly ran into the roadway and was hit by a vehicle that came hurtling down the road. Exact details of the crash, however, will be confirmed by Metro Police in due course.

Netcare 911 and City of Johannesburg paramedics found the child to have sustained life-threatening injuries. They worked fervently to stabilise the critically injured boy before the Netcare 911 helicopter airlifted him to a specialised facility for the care that he required.
