Team Roodepoort dominates at Joburg West athletics

Records tumbled and the Roodepoort team dominated at this year’s Johannesburg West Athletics Championships.

The event which was held at Roodepoort Stadium encompasses not only Roodepoort athletes but also Orlando West, Meadowlands, Dobsonville and BTS.

From U/8 to U/13, athletes participated in items such as javelin, shotput, long jump, high jump, track and discus.

Those who win their categories will get a chance to represent Joburg West at the Gauteng Athletics which will be held in Roodepoort.

Here they will be participating against other regions for a chance to represent the province at the national championships.

With 10 records being broken on the day which all belong to the Roodepoort team, this gives hope for Joburg West to put up a fight in the provincial competition.

Laerskool Roodekrans’ Amy Pretorius set a new record of 24.37m in the girls U/12 javelin, beating the old record of 23.95m set by Danè Roets.

In the boys U/13 long jump, Laerskool Florida’s Laney Joseph set a record of 5.35.

Panorama Primary’s BK Emone set a 1.28m record in the boys U/10 high jump competition while Unified Public School’s Felicia Makina set a 12.73s record in the girls U/8 80m.

Welteverdenpark Primary’s Alison Visser set a 2.22.43s record in the girls U/13 800m event, beating the record set in 2002.

Laerskool’s Dr Havinga’s Heinrich Jacobs set a 22.31s record in the boys U/12 150m hurdles, beating a record set 13 years ago.

This was not his only record setting event as he went on to beat another record set in 2002 at the boys U/12 75M event with a time of 12.15s.

Ridgevale Primary’s Caleb Mulenga beat a 6-year record in the boys U/13 shotput by setting a 12.46m.

Laeskool Helderkruin’s Angelique de Jager beat a 2011 record in the girls U/11 70m event with a time of 12.75s.

Wandile Lubisi from Panorama Primary set a record of 08.73s in the boys U/9 60m event.
