Civilian chases suspect, cop says he is off duty

Police officer from Provincial Head Office refuses to help.

A Whiteridge resident, Garron Moore who was chasing a suspect, was told by an uniformed police officer sitting in a Provincial Head Office vehicle that he could not help him since he was off duty.

Moore said he was at home in 11th Street this past Friday at around 4.40pm when his daughter told him someone was trying to break into the house. He chased the suspect to Ontdekkers Road where he saw a police officer in a parked official vehicle in front of a business that installs sound systems.

When he asked the officer to help him, the officer said he was a reservist and off duty and could not help him. He said he even repeated his request in Zulu but the officer still refused. Moore continued his pursuit of the suspect but lost him after running into a veld.

Moore also said his daughter could attest to the incident since she was with him. At around 5.30pm he called 10111, but police arrived only at 7.20pm.

A disappointed Moore said he did not bother to open a case after seeing the police’s lax response.

The Record approached Florida Police Station for comment but spokesperson Captain Lydia Dikolomelo said because it involved a police officer she had to escalate it to Provincial level. The Record supplied her with the registration number of the police vehicle.
