Slight relief from El Nino’s grip

All eyes on Free State.

South Africans have been sweating in more than one way the past few months due to the El Nino (The child) weather onslaught.

Roodepoorters sighed with relief when it finally rained a day after the hottest day recorded in Roodepoort (38°) last Thursday.

Torrents of rain came down on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday; 57mm, 22mm, 36mm and 29mm respectively; totaling 144mm. Unfortunately residents joy was tarnished by the extreme hail which accompanied the rain on Thursday, Friday and Saturday which caused substantial damage to property, vehicles and gardens.

The whole country’s eyes though were on the drought stricken Free State which has been declared a disaster area and is considered one of the major sources of South Africa’s food security. On Monday night farmers across the province welcomed the first rain in months. Some are concerned though that it might be too little too late but farmers nonetheless expressed their gratitude on social media.

More rain, especially thunder storms are expected for Roodepoort for the rest of the week.
