School assault: Confusion over disciplinary action

West Ridge High School pupil recovering, but his assailants might not be brought to book.

It remains uncertain what disciplinary process will be followed with the pupils in West Ridge High School accused of assaulting a peer to the point that he remains in ICU.

Although the mother of the boy, 17, was told that the children were expelled, the school governing body (SGB) could not confirm such actions to the Record, some members saying a meeting is still to be held about the happenings on Tuesday morning (10 November).

Yesterday WRHS principal, Sydney Mashite, and a few teachers visited the badly-injured pupil, currently recovering in the ICU at Life Flora Clinic, his older brother told the Record this morning.

“During their visit, some of the teachers told my brother his school-going assailants were suspended, not expelled,” he said.

“The truth is, we don’t know what disciplinary action has been taken but we expect them to be expelled for this horrible assault.”

The older brother said his brother has been recovering well and tests were performed yesterday, during which doctors found there is no more blood in his kidneys. He remains in ICU but the brother is hopeful that he will be moved to a normal ward today.

It is rumoured a meeting will be held at the school today with the parents of the children involved.

WRHS has still not responded to the Record’s enquiries and the Department of Education‘s spokesperson, Phumla Sekhonyane, has not availed herself to date.
