9 Useful tips to beat ATM fraud

Never ask strangers for help.

The Record has received many complaints in the past about ATM fraud circulating in the area.

At least 11 instances of ATM fraud in the past nine months were communicated to Western Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW), the Record reported on 5 June.

Witpoortjie resident, Johan Lewis, told the Record in a separate incident he was scammed earlier this year by ATM fraudsters and they withdrew about R4 000 from his account after snatching it from his hand.

Here are ways you can stay safe when using ATM’s:

1. Never force your card into the ATM – if the card is not easily accepted by the device, it may have been tampered with by criminals

2. Memorise your pin number instead of writing it down

3. Refrain from using your date of birth or numbers such as: 1234 as your pin. It should never be easy to guess.

4. Cover the keypad with your hand whenever you are withdrawing money and stand as close to the ATM as possible

5. After you withdraw cash, put it in your wallet or pocket immediately and avoid handling cash in public.

6. Check your bank statements and balances regularly and report any suspicious transactions to your local bank immediately.

7. Try to refrain from attending to strangers who may call you back to the ATM to help them complete a transaction. This is how skimming occurs.

8. Never ask strangers for help. If you are unsure about something, visit a nearby branch for assistance

9. Do not divulge your ATM pin to anyone, not even your friends.
