Florida Club canoests in Cradock

Florida Lake Canoe club canoeists perform well at Fish River Marathon.

Florida Lake Canoe Club members Jason Brown and Monique Steven had a successful outing at the recent Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon in Cradock.

The pair finished the 80 kilometre over two days race in a time of 6:6.

“Among the infamous obstacles is a double trouble shute, toastrack low level bridge, and Keiths Flyover which only 20% of the race field will attempt to shoot. The rest will gladly climb out of the river with boat and run around it or walk gracefully around it,” said Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas.

The high standard environment attracts national and international canoeists to participate in the Eastern Cape race.

“The river water released from the Grass Ridge dam on the edge of the Karoo near Hofmeyr is pristinely clean. It is fast flowing with enormous wave trains, some tricky rocky rapids. The race is popular among South African canoeists and also attracts international competitors to the promise of sure fast flowing white water,” said Dallas.
