Man gets scammed at ATM fraud hot spot

Victim took licence plate down.

An elderly man fell prey to two ATM fraudsters on Wednesday at what is alleged is a ATM fraud hot spot.

The man, Buti Skosana asked his brother to deposit R600 into his account. His brother told him to wait by the ATM, Nedbank outside Spar in Generaal Pienaar Avenue, for half an hour and then to check his balance. After half an hour he tried again but suddenly there wasa man on his right hand side who tried to interfere. He asked the man what he was doing and the man told him there is something wrong with the machine. Then another man appeared on his left hand side who told him he must put in his number again to get his card back. When he did this the other man saw what his number was and when his card was ejected they grabbed it. They ran away and led in a silver grey Volkswagen Vivo of which Skosana managed to write down the numberplate, DL 34 SV GP.

The suspects tried twice to draw money from his accounts at other ATM’s but luckily for Skosana his brother forgot to deposit the money. According to Skosana both Nedbank and an employee confirmed this ATM is regularly targeted. Nedbank also said the ATM at Witpoortjie Pick n Pay was another popular target for criminals.
