Cansa raises awareness

Cansa West Rand will be busy this month educating women about cancer.

“90 per cent of cancers are caused by the environment,” says Amanda Roestoff, spokesperson for The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) West Rand.

In September and October CANSA aims to raise awareness by educating women about breast, cervical, ovarian and uterine cancer via their ‘Tell her, Tell all’ Women’s Health campaign.

The Tell her, Tell all campaign which will be promoted at their events to come, aims to educate women on the significance of knowing their body, and the importance of regular cancer screening.

It is also to encourage women to get to know the warning signs of cancer and inform them about what to do to reduce the risk of contracting the illness.

“Anybody can be at risk at any time of their lives as various factors, including lifestyle has an influence,” she Amanda said.

She added women are at a greater advantage if they detect cancer at an early stage.

“The more frequent you do screenings, the quicker we can give guidance, medical assistance and professional help to remedy the health status.”

“CANSA encourages all women between the ages of 18 and 25 who have been sexually active to have a Papsmear. This should be done three years or two year later after first sexual activity – up until the age of 70.”
