Paramedics and a rescue team rushed to the university after two people sustained serious burns.

Two people sustained severe burns while working on an electrical transformer at Monash South Africa on Sunday night.

At around 8.19pm the transformer reportedly exploded resulting in second degree burns for both workers.

Netcare 911 paramedics and their rescue unit arrived on scene and found one man sustained 50 per cent burns while the other sustained 20 per cent burns, according to spokesperson Chris Botha.

“Medics worked fervently to stabilise the men at the scene and airlifted one critically injured patient,” he said.

“The other patient was transported by ambulance to a specialised facility for the care that he required.”
