Generator removed after girl, 3, was poisoned

Cell C sparked to get the situation rectified and the generator was subsequently removed.

After fumes emanating from their generator next to a residential property poisoned a little girl, Cell C sparked to set things straight.

According to spokesperson Karin Fourie they were only on Sunday (23 August) made aware of the fact that a girl, 3, was rushed to hospital after inhaling diesel fumes emanating from a generator on the adjacent property. She reportedly suffered multiple asthma attacks and had inhaled the fumes while sleeping in a cottage on the property, visiting her friend the previous night. She was subsequently rushed to the casualty department of Netcare Krugersdorp Private Hospital.

Cell C shares a hired cell phone mast on the property with Vodacom and had installed a generator on Thursday 20 August to keep the mast broadcasting after electricity supply to the property had been cut off. The property belongs to the American Tower Corporation (ATC) who rents the tower to the two service providers, but it remains unclear why City Power had cut electricity supply to it.

Yesterday (Tuesday 25 July) Fourie notified the Record that ATC and Cell C’s technical team confirmed electricity supply has been restored.

“The generator was subsequently removed,” Fourie in a press statement said.

The man on whose property the girl stayed, Chris Joubert, was not available to confirm facts this morning.

Vodacom spokesperson Tshepo Ramodibe had not yet confirmed that their generator, albeit smaller and further away from the residential property, had been removed.
