Your alternative to electricity

Advice on solar panels made easy.

An alternative to electricity may just be a Google search away.

Google has funded more than R26 billion in renewable projects and as a result, residents will be able to find out if installing solar panels will benefit them by adding their address to an online Google map.

Discovery resident Yvette Barnes says Googling your home to see if you should go solar might not be a bad idea.

“Although installing solar panels might be costly at first, it will definitely be your money’s worth in the long run,” said Yvette.

The map that will be launched by Google, will display the amount of sunlight your rooftop receives. This in turn will help you decide if you should get solar panels installed and whether would suit your pocket.

According to an online article this is how the map will work:

1. Type in your address.

2. After typing in your address, a Google Earth image of your home and the surrounding neighbourhood will appear.

3. The image will show how much space you have for solar panels on your roof, how many hours of rooftop sunlight you receive a year, and how much money you will save by installing the solar panels.

4. The the roofs will appear in colours ranging from purple to yellow to indicate how much sunlight is striking the surface.

“Because the price of electricity is increasing, I am always looking for alternatives,” Yvette said.

The date when the map will be launched still needs to be confirmed.

Would you use this map when it officially gets implemented?
